The text "Finn Finity meets" on the left, with an illustration of Finn Finity, Maths Week Scotland's mascot (or 'mathscot', right?): A large, blue infinity symbol forms Finn's eyes. These are much wider than the yellow circle representing the rest of his face and body, from which a pair of arms and a pair of legs protrude, both striped yellow and pink. In this depiction, Finn is wearing a brown hat. A card with "press" written on it is tucked into a purple band around the hat. Finn holds a microphone in their right hand, and a notepad in their left, and is wearing a determined expression.

Finn Finity Meets… (for Maths Week Scotland)

Maths Week Scotland comissioned me to write some learning resources. The original brief was very open: they wanted five maths-themed activities, related to the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence, to be offered to teachers (and anyone else looking to explore mathematical themes) for free on their website.

I wanted the resources to have explicit relevance to Scotland whilst still having relevance outside of its borders, so I took the opportunity to research some Scottish Mathematicians, aiming to explore one through each of the resources. I settled on John Napier; Eleanor Pairman; Sheila Scott Macintyre; Mary Somerville; and D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson. If you want to find out about what each of these people contributed to mathematics, explore the resources on Maths Week Scotland’s website!
