I’m the kind of teacher who doesn’t just want a student to pass their exams, but to really understand the ideas behind what they’re studying: I have a genuine love for mathematics and I do my best to pass on a little bit of that.
It’s not about getting the right answer; it’s about the journey we take to get there.
I only work with students who genuinely want to develop themselves further in mathematics – whatever level they are currently working at, and wherever they want to get to – and that means taking responsibility for their own learning: private tuition can only work if it’s in support of (rather than instead of) self-directed, independent study.
Our focus will always be on understanding why something works rather than just remembering what to do.
One-off maths tuition
Fees for one-off online maths tuition sessions are based on how soon you need one, and whether you’re available during the day or you need a session in the evening or at the weekend.
Note that providing more, clearer information before the session means that we’ll spend less time diagnosing what you need during the session, and therefore more time doing maths.
Book a one-off session by choosing one of the following options:
Fees below are for school-age students working up to GCSE.
For adults or students working towards A-level, please add £20 to the stated fee.
When do you need a session?

Are you looking for regular maths tuition?
If you want regular mathematics tuition sessions with me you can either…
- book multiple slots in advance using the appropriate booking forms above;
- book your next session shortly after each completed session, using the appropriate forms above; or
- get in touch to discuss a regular slot at the same time each week or fortnight. Regular slots are limited and cost £50 per session on the assumption that at least one term’s worth of sessions will take place.
Some Frequently Asked Questions:
What information should I provide?
Anything that will help me to target our session to your needs, such as:
- Your age or school year and stage
- Whether you’re working towards a qualification (such as a GCSE), and the exam board
- Which topics you’ve identified that you need to work on. The more specific the better: ‘increasing and decreasing a quantity by a percentage‘ or ‘understanding what the word ‘percentage’ means‘ will help me to help you much more than just ‘percentages’, for example.
Once you’ve booked a session you might want to send some resources, such as:
- Some example questions that you’ve struggled with. These are even more helpful if they include your attempted solution.
- Any questions from a mock exam paper that you’re still struggling with after you’ve had it marked and returned.
It is not appropriate to use materials that you have been set as an assessment, e.g. for homework or class tests, for this purpose unless it is after they have been submitted, marked, and returned.
What do I need to take part?
As a minimum you’ll need a computer and associated equipment and software required to join an online meeting via Google Meet.
It is also a good idea to have available all of the equipment that you would normally be expected to take to a maths lesson: pen, pencil, ruler, protractor, compasses, and a calculator.
How do I join the meeting?
When I confirm your session after you have submitted a request via one of the links below the email address you included will be sent a calendar invitation which contains a link to a Google Meet meeting. You can click this link at any time before the session to check that your equipment is appropriate to access the meeting, and then again in order to join the meeting at the appropriate time. I am unable to provide technical support for joining meetings and I recommend testing that you are able to use the technology as early as possible in case you need to cancel (see T&Cs below).
Do you set homework?
No. Your own self-directed study has the potential to be far more valuable than any homework I could set, and I’m happy to use part of our session time to discuss tips and techniques for this if required.
If, however, you still want me to set homework for you this can be discussed as an add-on to your session billed at the same rate for the additional time required on my pat (minimum one extra hour).
Do you provide notes / powerpoints?
I will only rarely use presentation materials for specific topics. Most of the time we will work together. On request I will save and send a static copy of the on-screen written work that we complete together, but I strongly recommend that you make your own notes as we go along. I will not dictate notes to you, but I’m happy to provide guidance around effective note-taking as we go along – just ask!
How do I pay?
An invoice will be sent after each session to the email address provided in the invoice details field on the booking form. Invoices must be settled in any case within 30 calendar days, but no future bookings will be confirmed for a student associated with an outstanding invoice.

- agree to these terms & conditions
- are willing and able to pay the indicated fee
- I cannot guarantee availability at any time, even if it appears to be available in my booking system, until I have explicitly confirmed the booking
- Tuition sessions are not officially booked until confirmed by me and I have accepted the entry in my calendar
- If a tuition session is cancelled by me at any time you will not be charged.
- If a tuition session is cancelled by you:
- with more than 24 hours notice you will not be charged
- with between 24 hours and 12 hours notice you will be charged 50% of the fee agreed to at the time of booking
- with less than 12 hours notice you will be charged 100% of the fee agreed to at the time of booking
- Any tuition session will end one hour after the agreed start time unless the start is delayed by me, in which case you will be given the option to delay the end of the session by the same amount (if my schedule allows), or to reschedule the session at no extra charge.
- You may choose to have a tuition session of less than one hour, but the minimum charge will be for a one hour session.
- You may book tuition sessions that last more than one hour, charged in one-hour increments at the rate booked. If you wish to book a session that lasts more than one hour, please book a one-hour session and then get in touch to discuss extending it.
- The more clear and specific the information submitted prior to a tuition session, the better use we will be able to make of the time that you are paying for: the less time I spend diagnosing your needs during a session, the more time we can spend doing maths.
- Invoices are sent soon after each session to the email address provided in the invoice details section of the booking form. These details must be those of a responsible adult. Payment must be made by bank transfer to the bank details included in the invoice within 30 calendar days of the date the invoice is sent.
- Bookings will not be confirmed if (1) contact details of a responsible adult who agrees to receive and arrange payment of the invoice are not included, or (2) where there is an outstanding invoice associated with either the student or adult responsible for paying the invoice.
