On Thursday, 6th Feb 2025, I delivered an online workshop for Campaign for Learning.
This online workshop, hosted by the National Centre for Family Learning (from ), was aimed at professionals working with families in any learning context supporting the development of children, young people and families, and aimed to provide these professionals with some hints and tips for using museums and galleries to explore mathematical themes.
From the programme:
Maths is everywhere, but you might not know it. You might also not think of a museum, gallery or heritage site as someplace to learn and explore mathematics. But every museum, gallery, or heritage site is abundant with opportunities to explore aspects of mathematics, though in most they can be a little hard to spot.
Attendees were promised that during this workshop they would:
- learn how to identify the maths in their venue (either as an employee or a visitor)
- learn how to use maths to create new learning opportunities and embed it in their existing practice
- explore existing resources to inspire them and their learners
- put theory into practice with a short practical exercise
In this session, heritage, gallery and museum sites were used as case-studies to show participants how to recognise where maths can be found out in the real world, right in front of our eyes!
